CALDEARENAS TUNNEL

Caldearenas – Huesca, Spain

On March 21st 2019, the star of the A-23 highway macro project came into service: the Caldearenas Tunnel, which is the second longest in Aragon, at 2,885 metres. The infrastructure is located in the Alto de Monrepós-Caldearenas section, part of the Monrepós tunnel system, which connects the cities of Huesca and Sabiñánigo by circumventing the complicated orography of the pre-Pyrenean pass. The opening of this great infrastructure has meant huge progress in the route and safety of the highway.

Carandini was in charge of lighting this large infrastructure, and the project has ranged from supply to assistance with the installation, programming and commissioning of the tunnel lighting control system.

According to the Ministry of Development, this infrastructure is equipped with “the most innovative security equipment available on the market”. Among this equipment is the Carandini lighting system, which combines the T-MAX LED floodlight with the Controlux Tunnel management system. It was presented as a case study at the VII Road Tunnels Symposium held in Barcelona in February.

T-MAX, a high performance floodlight
The T-MAX floodlight was ideal for Caldearenas tunnel lighting. With a wide range of light packages, ratings and optical distributions, every section of the infrastructure has covered with great results.

T-MAX incorporates highly efficient state-of-the-art LED technology. In addition, the optics available make it able to provide adequate levels of luminance, uniformity and distribution over the road surface and tunnel walls, providing the driver with conditions of optimum visual comfort.

Its design has the equipment in a separate compartment from the luminaire itself, maximising thermal management and ensuring the lifetime and performance of the floodlight.

In addition, it has an IP69K seal rating, which makes it suitable for high pressure cleaning, which is essential in facilitating cleaning and maintenance operations.

Controlux Tunnel and its benefits
The addition of Controlux Tunnel to T-MAX floodlights makes the amount of light dynamically and automatically adjustable, regardless of the presence of factors such as the amount of external light, the maximum speed allowed, or the number of vehicles in circulation at a particular time.
