Set on the right bank of the Avia River and in close proximity to the Miño River, Ribadavia is a town full of history and charm. It boasts one of the most significant historical urban centres in Galicia, which was declared an Artistic-Historical Site in 1947, and has a long Jewish tradition. It is part of the “Route of the Jewish Quarters” or “Sefarad Route,” along with seven other cities in Spain, and it harbours a century-old winemaking tradition.
LED LIGHTING FOR A MORE ECOLOGICAL AND EFFICIENT ILLUMINATION
Surrounded by a dreamlike natural environment, this Galician village underwent a lighting renovation at the end of last year. The old discharge lamps installed had low energy efficiency and had a high environmental impact.
With the goal of achieving a more ecological and sustainable city, the Concello (Town Council) of Ribadavia decided to collaborate with Carandini, together with the engineering firm Sertogal, S.L., and the installation company Aopil, S.L for the upgrade of its lighting system.
In total, over 1,200 new high-efficiency and low-consumption LED luminaires were installed in different urban spaces.
For roads, avenues, and traffic areas, Urbalite solution was chosen, which features sleek and modern design lines adaptable to all types of urban areas. For parks, gardens, and pedestrian areas, two products were selected: the Century solution with contemporary aesthetics and the C-line luminaire designed with a polycarbonate and reinforced polyamide diffuser.
The T-MAX projector was installed in several roundabouts of the town, while the Mikos amenity projector was chosen for false tunnels, parks, and gardens.
To achieve greater energy savings, Carandini regulated the luminaires to automatically reduce their light output by 30% during the less busy hours of the night.
By installing new LED luminaires and a smart control system, the Ribadavia Local Council has made the city more environmentally friendly and sustainable while obtaining an energy saving of 60% and a monetary saving of more than €50,000 per year.
AN AWARD-WINNING PROJECT FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY
The positive outcomes of this project were recognized at the IX Galicia Energy Awards 2022. The award is presented by the Official College of Industrial Engineers in partnership with the Galician Association of Industrial Engineers to recognise the most outstanding people, companies and entities in the field of energy throughout Galicia.
With this initiative, Ribadavia has become a benchmark in Galicia in terms of energy efficiency, combining its rich history and winemaking tradition with a vision for a sustainable future.
