
In a world increasingly aware of the need to protect the environment and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, solar lighting solutions are emerging as a viable and effective alternative for municipalities. Spain is one of the pioneers in adopting solar energy thanks to its privileged location and weather conditions. It has one of the highest solar radiation rates on the continent and its mostly Mediterranean climate is characterised by long, sunny summers and low cloud cover.
LIGHTING THE N-330 BIKE LANE WITH A SUSTAINABLE, ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY SOLUTION
Taking advantage of these conditions, several Spanish cities have implemented lighting projects with solar solutions, such as the one developed by Carandini on the new one-way bike lane along the N-330 road between Sabiñánigo and Jaca, in Huesca.


Due to the increase in cycling use and the need to improve road safety, the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda rehabilitated the road by constructing a new bike lane.
A sustainable solution was needed to light this new cycle path that wouldn’t require excavation and offered a simple installation. Since the area to be illuminated is far from any urban zone and has no electrical power, it was essential to install a fully autonomous luminaire powered solely by solar energy.

Carandini’s Zenit luminaire was the chosen solution. This system includes three main components: an adjustable solar panel that maximises solar light capture, the Veka luminaire approved by the Dark Sky Association and a battery with more than 4,000 charge cycles. It also incorporates a smart time-regulation system that further optimises energy savings.

The new lighting has increased safety on the N-330 road for both drivers and cyclists, allowing cycling enthusiasts to enjoy a safe and well-lit route at nightfall. Furthermore, the smart system installed achieves greater long-term savings. By not relying on the electrical grid, this new installation promotes more environmentally friendly and sustainable mobility while respecting the environment and its inhabitants.

CUSTOMISED STUDY: KEY TO SUCCESS IN SOLAR LIGHTING PROJECTS
The success of a solar project depends on proper sizing. To ensure that the selected solution meets energy requirements, the customer’s needs, geographical characteristics of the area and available solar radiation are analysed. Carandini uses the Photovoltaic Geographical Information System, a global database that provides a detailed history of solar radiation depending on the time of year. With this information, continuous and uninterrupted operation is guaranteed, even in unfavourable conditions such as winter or areas with low solar radiation.
