The University of Rovira i Virgili is located in Tarragona, Spain, in the region of Catalunya. It’s one of the leading university centres in Europe, thanks to its commitment to research, development and innovation.

It was created in 1991 by the Parliament of Catalunya with the aim of restoring the 16th century Tarragona University.

Every year, more than 15,000 students from around the world pursue one of the bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degrees offered by the centre.

A SAFE AND WELL-LIT CAMPUS

The University of Rovira i Virgili had the objective of renovating the lighting for one of its main Campus, Campus Catalunya, in order to create a safer, friendlier and better-lit space after sundown. The installed lighting consisted of inefficient wall sconces that provided poor illumination, with indirect light that created patches of darkness and high energy consumption.

Carandini proposed a solution based on T-MAX, and V-MAX, luminaires with LED technology, high durability and respect for the environment and people.

A CUSTOM-MADE PROJECT

Architecturally speaking, Campus Catalunya is characterised by a simple, modern aesthetic. It has a main square with two floating footbridges, and it’s surrounded by buildings with a minimalist design.

To maintain this contemporary feel, one of the university’s requests was the need to integrate the product into the architecture of the space.

Taking into account the client’s needs, Carandini developed a tailor-made project.

For the floating footbridges and covered walkways, the V-MAX modular luminaire was customized into a smaller, minimalist and functional product. The result was a wall-mounted solution, almost imperceptible to the naked eye and, as requested by the client, fully integrated into the area.

To achieve the desired lighting, floodlights from T-MAX, 3000K colour temperature and a CRI of 80, were installed at the highest points, located in the centre of the square.

ILLUMINATING THE MINDS OF THE FUTURE

The lighting renovation of Campus Catalunya has created a friendlier, more comfortable space with a high level of visual comfort, more efficiency and a greater level of security for students, staff and teachers.

With the new lighting, Carandini plays its part in contributing to the development of knowledge the minds of the future.
