At the heart of Madrid’s road network, just beneath the railway tracks leading to Delicias station, lies the interurban tunnel connecting Oriana Street with Estrella Naos Street. This location, used daily by residents and workers, serves as an access route to the Méndez Álvaro area, a neighbourhood currently undergoing significant urban and business development, hosting the corporate headquarters of major companies.

As part of its public lighting modernisation plan, the Madrid City Council decided to upgrade the tunnel’s lighting system, replacing the old sodium vapour lamps with LED technology. For this project, they chose Carandini’s T-XTREME luminaire, a modular system specially designed to deliver maximum efficiency, durability, and reliability in demanding environments.

VISUAL COMFORT AND MAXIMUM SAFETY FOR DRIVERS AND PEDESTRIANS

One distinctive feature of this underpass is that it serves both vehicles and pedestrians, featuring a dedicated pavement. This posed an additional challenge for the lighting design, as both spaces needed to be effectively illuminated. Therefore, a uniform solution was developed to ensure excellent visibility on both the roadway and the pavement, guaranteeing safety and visual comfort for all users, drivers and pedestrians alike.

Thanks to T-XTREME’s photometric technology, excellent lighting uniformity has been achieved throughout the tunnel, with homogeneous light distribution across both the roadway and the pedestrian area. This lighting design allows drivers to quickly detect any obstacles along the way, while providing a safe and comfortable environment for pedestrians.

REDUCED INSTALLATION TIME AND MAINTENANCE WORK

To minimise disruptions to traffic, it is essential to have a flexible lighting solution that is easy and quick to install, allowing the lighting system to be replaced within a few hours. Thanks to the plug & play system integrated into T-XTREME — with pre-wired cables, LED modules, and driver boxes ready for connection — a fast, efficient installation was possible, meeting the project’s deadlines. Additionally, this modular configuration simplifies future maintenance tasks, reducing intervention time and enhancing the tunnel’s long-term operability.
