The lighting upgrade of the San Roque football field in Agoncillo (La Rioja) is a clear example of how a well-planned project can significantly improve the quality of public spaces. This facility, essential to the town’s sporting and social life, has been equipped with a more efficient and environmentally friendly lighting system.

To carry out this improvement, the City Council entrusted Carandini’s Athlos floodlight, a solution specifically designed for large areas that require high-mount lighting. Thanks to its 1, 2 or 3-module versions, Athlos offers a luminous flux of up to 276,000 lumens and an efficiency of 142 lm/W, making it the ideal choice for sports facilities like this one.

TAILORED STUDY FOR OPTIMAL RESULTS

Thanks to the preliminary lighting study and on-site measurements carried out by Carandini’s technical team, results exceeding the requirements established by regulations for this type of sports facility have been achieved. The football field was classified as CLASS I, which requires an average horizontal illuminance (Ehor ave) of 500 lux, an average uniformity (U2hor) of 0.70, a colour rendering index (Ra) equal to or greater than 70, and a glare rating (GR) below 55.

By combining two optics (SCE3 and SCE4) and installing eight 1200 W Athlos floodlights per column, Carandini achieved lighting levels that exceed the established standards. These results were validated both in the study and on-site: an average illuminance of 506 lux, an average uniformity of 0.75, and an excellent extreme uniformity (U1hor) of 0.62. Additionally, the maximum glare rating (GR) was 45, well below the established limit.

Although extreme uniformity is not specified in the regulations, Carandini, thanks to its extensive experience, also considers this parameter—understood as the ratio between minimum and maximum illuminance—a key indicator for ensuring visual comfort and reducing contrast between light and dark areas of the field.

FULL CONTROL FROM MOBILE: CUSTOMISED LIGHTING WITH CONTROLUX SPORTS 

In addition to modernising the lighting system with LED technology, the City Council of Agoncillo has implemented Carandini’s intelligent control system, Controlux Sports, designed to remotely and individually manage the lighting according to usage and time of day.

This system allows each lighting tower to be switched off or adjusted independently, adapting the lighting to the type of activity and time slot (matches, maintenance tasks, etc.). Currently, five different scenarios have been configured with intensity levels of 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25%.

All these scenes can be managed by the facility staff quickly and easily through a free mobile app, without needing access to the control panel or specialised technical support.

QUALITY LIGHTING, REAL SAVINGS AND COMMITMENT TO THE FUTURE

The modernisation of the lighting system with Carandini’s Athlos solution has significantly improved visibility on the field for both players and spectators. The new luminaires provide excellent uniformity with no dark spots and a colour temperature of 4000K, ensuring exceptional playing conditions and greater visual comfort on the field and in the stands.

This intervention has not only improved the quality of the lighting, but also reduced energy consumption, maintenance needs, and extended the life of the installation. A firm step toward energy efficiency that strengthens the municipality’s commitment to sustainability and the continuous improvement of its sports infrastructure.
