The Oindolar tunnel is located on the A-15, the main road connecting Guipúzcoa to Nafarroa in the Basque Country, with a length of 552 meters. It has been in service since 1995 and is a key infrastructure in northern Spain, situated on one of the main axes of communication at European level.

With the aim of enhancing its safety and aligning this infrastructure with the regulations established by the European Union for tunnels exceeding 500 meters, the Gipuzkoa Delegation decided to carry out a comprehensive rehabilitation of the various tunnels on the motorway, including the Oindolar tunnel we are discussing today.

LED LIGHTING RENOVATION

Among the planned modernisation works was the comprehensive renovation of the lighting system. The old discharge projectors had to be replaced with LED lighting to ensure safer, more comfortable and modern mobility, while achieving energy consumption savings.

For this project, the delegation trusted Carandini and its T-MAX solution, a modular projector known for its extraordinary reliability and durability, designed to last for decades even in the most extreme conditions.

In total, 122 units of T-MAX size “L” were installed as supplementary lighting at the tunnel entrance and exit to counteract the sunlight from outside, thereby reducing the characteristic black hole effect in these types of infrastructures. Inside, as permanent lighting, 238 units of T-MAX “M” and “S” were installed. To complete the installation and standardise the LED lighting on the road section, six units of V-MAX were placed just before the tunnel and six more at the exit.

IMPROVING ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND ADHERENCE TO EUROPEAN STANDARDS

The new Carandini lighting, installed by Elektra, S.A, has successfully improved energy efficiency with a 40% savings, increased the installation’s durability, and brought it in line with European standards. 

The lighting at the entrances and inside the Oindolar tunnel is now more uniform, enhancing the driving experience for users and making safer an infrastructure essential for the daily lives of citizens and the region’s economy.
