PORTAVENTURA PARK, TARRAGONA – SPAIN

Salou and Vila-seca, Tarragona – Spain

PortAventura Park, one of the top five most visited theme parks in Europe and the largest in Spain, is located in Salou and Vila-seca, near the city of Tarragona. It is part of the PortAventura World Resort, which includes two additional leisure parks: Ferrari Land and Caribe Aquatic Park.

Known for its thrilling rides, live shows, themed areas, as well as hotels, shops, and restaurants, the park consistently aims to surprise its visitors by introducing new attractions periodically. In line with this commitment, the park unveiled “Uncharted” in 2023, the first dark ride roller coaster based on the successful video game of the same name. Positioned next to the Carousel in the Far West section, this innovative attraction plunges passengers in an immersive experience with dark moments, special effects, launches, and unexpected twists. Notably, it is the world’s first roller coaster to feature a sideways launch during the ride.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND SPECTACLE

The construction of this impressive roller coaster called for lighting that would enhance its exterior, characterised by a towering rocky mountain typical of the Far West desert, dominated by a wooden structure serving as the entrance to the attraction. The park’s management selected Carandini, a company already responsible for illuminating other areas of the park in the past, for this new installation, as well as for the renovation of the lighting at the entrance, park entries, and the complex’s parking.

For the lighting of “Uncharted,” 17 units of the Mikos projector were installed on the façade and around the attraction. Mikos is a robust product known for its photometric quality, minimal maintenance, and long lifespan.

For the entries and park entrance, the C-line ambient luminaire was chosen, a functional and aesthetically elegant solution that is highly efficient.

The V-MAX street lighting luminaire was the adopted solution for illuminating the parking area and roadways. In total, over 300 units were installed in the various parking lots throughout the resort. V-MAX is a modular, avant-garde solution that allows for creating powerful and uniform lighting at great heights in large areas.

OBJECTIVES MET

This project successfully achieved a triple objective. Firstly, the new lighting for “Uncharted” has effectively added volume and emphasised key visual elements of the attraction, attracting visitors during the dark hours of the day. Additionally, through the renovation of the lighting in entrances and parking areas, an energy saving of over 60% has been achieved. Lastly, a warm colour temperature of 2700K was installed, in compliance with Decree 190/2015 of the Generalitat, reinforcing the commitment to current regulations and the care of our surroundings and the environment.
