In line with Barcelona’s ecology and urbanism plan, in 2021, the City Council of the Catalan capital decided to convert an old temporary sports area located in the Ciutat Meridiana neighbourhood into the new Aqueduct Park (Parc de l’Aqüeducte), a natural space at the foot of the Collserola mountain range, whose name pays homage to the aqueduct that crosses it, built during the 19th century.

A COLLABORATIVE PROJECT DESIGNED WITH THE RESIDENTS

This new green oasis was designed in collaboration with residents and users of the neighbourhood who, together with the city council, designed what would be one of the new green lungs of the city.

With an area of 12,260m2, the new Aqueduct Park was divided into three different areas: a children’s play area, a bocce court and a gym circuit for the elderly.

A COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE LIGHTING

The City of Barcelona commissioned Carandini to provide a lighting solution that would be in line with the city’s sustainability and environmental goals. In addition, the required solution had to define the different leisure areas very well and ensure perfect visibility, so that users could move around at night in complete safety.

In total, Carandini installed 74 Mikos luminaires, 29 TPL floodlights and 25 HFL screens, with a uniformity of more than 0.4 and a CRI of more than 70.

To further integrate the product into the environment, the Barcelona City Council decided to place the columns in oxiron brown.

KEY POINT: ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Many cities have chosen to re-educate themselves strategically and reduce their energy consumption to meet some of today’s major challenges: pollution, energy savings, respect for biodiversity…

Barcelona has been one of them, which is why Carandini was commissioned not only to supply more than 100 lights, but also to install a control system.

After a study carried out by Carandini’s smart lighting department, it was decided to install a communication node in each luminaire. These nodes made it possible to automatically reduce the initial light intensity by 30% during off-peak hours of the day.

This new control system resulted in significant energy and financial savings for the city, as well as a reduction in light pollution.

With the redevelopment of the space, the new Aqueduct Park has become one of the most pleasant places in the city, perfect for resting, playing sports or chatting with friends and residents.

Thanks to the new lighting provided by Carandini, the residents of Barcelona can now enjoy a safer, more sustainable and elegant environment.
