St. Thomas More College is a university residence located in Perth, Western Australia, offering accommodation to students from diverse backgrounds and academic disciplines. It is situated within the campus of The University of Western Australia (UWA), one of the country’s oldest and most respected universities, known for its undergraduate and postgraduate programs in fields such as science, engineering, business, arts, and health.

A MODERN CAMPUS WITH ACADEMIC, CULTURAL AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

St. Thomas More College welcomes over 400 students from around the world each year, attracted by its modern facilities, multicultural environment, and a rich schedule of social, cultural, and sports events. One of its most iconic spaces is the porch, a covered outdoor area designed to host multidisciplinary activities that encourage interaction among residents and strengthen the sense of community.

To improve its facilities, The University of Western Australia aimed to illuminate this porch with a twofold objective. On one hand, to enhance visibility and increase safety by creating a more welcoming and visually attractive environment with white light, and on the other hand, to incorporate an RGB solution that would allow the organization of events and activities, transforming the space into a vibrant and appealing area for socializing and relaxing.

DYNAMIC RGBW ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING

This project posed a significant technical challenge. We had to integrate two different types of lighting into a single fixture while creating dynamic light scenarios. However, thanks to the close collaboration between Carandini and Sii Light, our partner in Australia, a customized solution was developed that not only met the client’s objectives but also exceeded their expectations.

To achieve a well-lit space with high-quality lighting, 12 units of the Spin projector with optimal AME were installed, ensuring exceptional light uniformity with a color temperature of 3000K.

To achieve dynamic RGB architectural lighting, an innovative PCB was designed, equipped with a combination of LEDs in different colors (red, green, and blue). This configuration allows the full color spectrum to be generated through a DMX driver, which precisely adjusts the intensity of each channel, thus achieving a versatile and fully customized lighting solution.

DETAILED LIGHTING STUDY FOR AN ATTRACTIVE SPACE

Carandini conducted a detailed lighting study that defined the appropriate configuration of the luminaires and the integration of RGB technology, ensuring both functionality for events and an attractive and safe environment.

CUSTOMIZATION AS A SUCCESS STORY

The quality of the light and its chromatic flexibility have transformed the porch of St. Thomas More College into a much more versatile and attractive space. Thanks to the RGB LEDs, the campus can now be illuminated in various colors, creating personalized scenarios adapted to the different events they wish to organize.

 

The client is very satisfied with the result and has highlighted the improvements made in both the aesthetics and functionality of the space.
